What We Believe

Our History

Sanctuary’s history begins over 70 years ago when Rev. GB Lee, with a small group of believers, planted a church named Fair Heights Baptist Church on a high point in Greenville, South Carolina. He had started two other churches in Greenville, East Park and Eastlan. His vision was to see the gospel change Greenville. That is still the vision of Sanctuary today.

In the early 1970s, a group of students at Clemson started a Christian coffee house on Friday and Saturday nights. The venue brought in contemporary Christian singers and bands to reach a younger generation. Fair Heights sponsored this group which met in the old Fair Heights church building. The venue was called The Sanctuary. Years later Fair Heights merged with another small church, True Life, and changed the name of the church to Sanctuary. The church’s desire was to reach a younger generation with the gospel.

Sanctuary has gone through many changes since 1949, including another merger with East Park, but her mission has remained the same, to see the gospel change Greenville. If you are looking for a church home where the gospel is clearly proclaimed, the people of God are loved and discipled, and the world is our mission field, we invite you to join us on the journey of Faith. You are welcome at Sanctuary.
